A Contrastive Study of"Tongue"Metaphors Between English and Chinese
Based on conceptual metaphor, this paper comparatively analyzes the metaphors of"tongue"in English and Chinese. The results show that most of the metaphors of"tongue"in English and Chinese are similar, but some of them exist only in English or Chinese. The target domains of"tongue"include:an object with a similar shape to that of a tongue, language or dialect, speech or discourse, the ability to speak, the way of speaking or the speaker's emotion, debates or disputes, arguments or gossip, etc.Among them, the way of speaking or the speaker's emotion reflects the conceptual metaphor of"MIND-AS-BODY",which exists in both English and Chinese. In addition, although the tongue is an organ of both articulation and taste, most metaphors in English and Chinese are based on the experi-ence of articulation, and few are based on the experience of taste.
