Alignment Effects of Argumentative Writings on Continuation Tasks
The researches on continuation tasks mainly focus on narrative texts. This study explores the alignment effect in lexical lev-el,syntactic level and error frequency of continuation tasks with argumentative texts. One hundred and twenty freshmen majoring in Eng-lish were recruited from a domestic university. They were assigned into two groups:continuation task group and writing-only task group. The continuation task group did a continuation task with the argumentative text and the writing-only task group did a writing-only task with the same topic as the argumentative text. Results indicate that, alignment effect was found in continuation task with the argumentative text. The continuation task group imitated more words in the original material. There was no significant difference in form-based or meaning-based error frequency between the two tasks. This study provides empirical evidence for the application of argumentative text in continua-tion tasks.Implications can also be drawn for task design and teaching practice in continuation tasks.
