Research on Statistical Learning and Its Implications for Foreign Language Teaching in China
Statistical learning is an important construct in cognitive sciences, which refers to the process by which one tracks the dis-tributional information in sensory input to detect the structure of the environment.Relevant studies have found that statistical learning plays an important role in speech learning, speech stream segmentation, morphological pattern detection, syntactic generalization and language pattern learning. This paper analyzes the main features of statistical learning and its functions in language learning, and finds that statisti-cal learning is a basic cognitive capacity found across cognitive domains, which develops and changes with age,has modal specific and in-formation specific, and reflects the characteristics of hierarchy and memory dependence.Based on the consensus of research on statistical learning, this paper proposes some implications for foreign language teaching in China.
