Analyzing Errors in B.S.Bonsall's Complete English Translation of Hongloumeng—A Case Study of the Translation of Furong Nüer Lei
The Reverend B.S.Bonsall's translation of Hongloumeng has been acknowledged as the first complete English translation of the novel.The study of this translation is still at an initial stage up till the present day.Most of the previous related studies are macroscopic and therefore lack in-depth and detailed research.The study analyzes errors in B.S.Bonsall's translation in the case of the translation of Furong Nüer Lei which is the longest verse in the novel from the aspects of the master copy on which the translation is based,the language competence of the translator and misunderstanding of culture,etc.The result of this study provides a basis for scientifically evaluating B.S.Bonsall's translation and also gives some advice on the work of literary translation in the future.
