With China's new urbanization entering a new stage, promoting metropolitan areas'development becomes the objective trend and inevitable requirement. It is significant to summarize its development laws and evolution characteristics with Chinese characteristics.Especially from the perspective of spatial structure and functional network connection, this paper analyzes five of China's typical metropolitan areas. The results show that these development-oriented national-level metropolitan areas represent different spatial structures. The supply and demand of supporting functional facilities in each metropolitan area are insufficient, and the resource distribution is uneven. Most metropolitan areas show a centripetally-strengthened functional network trend near the central urban area.Regional network coordination has initially taken shape. In addition, the spatial structure and functional network of the metropolitan area are affected by various factors of the internal and external environment.Based on the research results, this paper puts forward the corresponding planning and policy suggestions to optimize the metropolitan area's spatial pattern and promote the high-quality development of the metropolitan area in China.
