Study on the Spatial Form and Generation Mechanism of Rural Settlement in Xiaoshan Area,Zhejiang under the Influence of Water System
Guided by the veins of water that trace through the countryside, this examination sets its sights on the rural settlements of the Xiaoshan area in Zhejiang. With the meticulousness of a craftsman applying tools to wood,GIS spatial analysis is utilized to unearth the relationship between the siting of these settlements and the water systems that sustain them.Merging the physicality of the land with the fluid dynamics of water, the landscape is dissected into four distinct morphological patterns:the settlements nestled in hilly terraces, those surrounded by lake wetlands, the communities edged by creek embankments, and the archetypical polder villages. From this analytical vantage, four representative settlements are selected, their spatial configurations meticulously diagrammed to shed light on their form. The influence of the natural environment, agricultural water management, and the web of water transport on the genesis of these settlement forms is scrutinized with a clear-eyed view. This endeavor not only charts the terrain but also sows seeds for the future-offering insights and pathways for the conservation and revitalization of the spatial form and landscape characteristics of rural settlements cradled by water networks.
