Bernard Bailyn's Contextualist Approach and Its Implications for Educational Historiography
Educational historiography is not simply an important part of teacher education curriculum, but also an emerging research field that introduces a variety of historiographical approaches to educational research. For instance,Bernard Bailyn(1922-2020),a Harvard Professor Emeritus, adopted a contextualist approach in his book about early American educational history. His approach emphasizes the importance of 1)an amoral stance in historical studies of education,2)a contextualized understanding of historical events, and 3)an in-depth analysis of the interpenetration of manifest events and latent events(that is,events that contemporaries were not fully or clearly aware of).The introduction of this contextualist approach not only expands the scope of historical studies in education, but also helps promote objectivity and avoid anachronism in educational historiography.
