Achieving Interdisciplinarity via De-Departmentalization:Organizational Innovation in Singapore University of Technology and Design
Singapore University of Technology and Design(SUTD)is the first university in the world that achieves interdisciplinarity via fully de-departmentalization.Unlike traditional universities that feature both discipline-based departments and interdisciplinary u-nits,SUTD is built around four interdisciplinary pillars(i.e."Architecture and Sustainable Design","Engineering Product Develop-ment","Engineering Systems and Design",and"Information Systems Technology and Design"),that are supported by two multidis-ciplinary clusters for general education(i.e."Humanities,Arts and Social Sciences"and"Science,Mathematics and Technology").In addition,SUTD builds homogeneous and heterogeneous inter-organizational networks to promote university-industry-government collaboration and foster mutually beneficial partnership with other colleges and universities.Tearing down the walls between different departments to facilitate resource allocation and meet the needs of emerging industries,SUTD helps solve complex and practical prob-lems via collaborative innovation.Nevertheless, the SUTD model is not just about de-departmentalization,but also the transformation of the university via building a culture of interdisciplinary collaboration and implementing multi-stakeholder co-governance.
