From Subversion to Reconstruction:Philosophical Reflections on Higher Education in the Era of Artificial Intelligence
In the age of AI(artificial intelligence),philosophical reflections and reexaminations of the nature of higher education are of vital importance. In fact, the dichotomy between symbolism and connectionism, two different paradigms in Al research,is closely related to two competing philosophical schools of thought:rationalism and empiricism.Due to certain unsolved philosophical puzzles concerning intentionality, conceptual frameworks and contextual issues, today AI technologies such as,ChatGPT still are unable to simulate the human brain and its intricacy. However, with the advent of Al,the legitimacy of higher education institutions(HEIs)as places for knowledge production and talent training has been challenged by the new mode of knowledge work via AI and the permeation of instrumental rationality. To restore the legitimacy of HEIs and re-establish universities as the"lighthouse of human civilization",we should continue pursuing high-level knowledge, find ways to address the ethical issues in AI,and above all,re-claim the importance of humanism via highlighting the unique values of humans'being present and agency in the age of AI.
