The Korean Yoon Suk-yeol Government's Economic Security Strategy
After assumed the presidency,Yoon Suk-yeol elevated economic security to a strategic level, and established South Korea's economic security strategy through institutionalization, autonomy, diversification, and alignment, focusing on perfecting security mechanisms, achieving strategic independence in industries and technology, enhancing supply chain resilience, expanding economic and trade networks, and forming economic and technological alliances. This strategy aims to mitigate supply chain risks, enhance economic and technological competitiveness, and address economic coercion. It also serves South Korea's diplomatic strategy adjustment and the goal of building a"Global Pivotal State."At the same time,Yoon Suk-yeol administration seeks to shape an international economic order favorable to South Korea, through balancing China's development by following the United States and participating in the formulation of international economic and trade rules. This strategy will deepen the comprehensive alliance between South Korea and the United States,as well as the trilateral quasi-alliance between South Korea, the United States, and Japan. It will hinder the economic integration of the Asia-Pacific region, stimulate the complexity of regional security order, and add difficulties to the long-term development of China-South Korea relations. However, the advancement and implementation of this strategy are constrained by internal contradictions, conflicts of interest between South Korea and the United States,as well as mutual dependence between China and South Korea. The outlook for it remains to be observed.
