A series of polybenzimidazole-based anion exchange membranes with ether-alkyl spaced tri-cationic side chains(oat-PBI-x)are synthesized. The two flexible ether-containing segments in the side chain greatly contribute to the formation of hydrophilic ionic channels and hydrogen bond networks, promoting OH-ions to transfer rapidly, while the hexyl spacer segments can weak the hydrophilic property of the side chain and effectively inhibit the membranes from swelling excessively. The membrane achieves the optimal comprehensive performance when IEC is 1.40 mmol·g-1.That is,oat-PBI-l.40 membrane possesses a high hydroxide conductivity of 144.4 mS·cm-1 at 80℃,and a tensile strength of 21 MPa.After the membrane has been soaked in 80℃,1 mol·L-1 KOH solution for about 900 h,the conductivity remains around 91.7%.As oat-PBI-1.40 membrane is applied in H2/O2 fuel cell,a peak power density of 611 mW·cm-2 can be achieved at 80℃ under a current density as high as 1,549 mA·cm-2.
