Innovative research progress of 2024 U.S.Green Chemistry Challenge Award projects
On September 26,2024,the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency announced the winners of the 2024 Green Chemistry Challenge Awards for new and innovative green chemistry technologies.The five awards,their winners and their respective innovation are expounded and described.Greener Synthetic Pathways award is won by Merck&Co.Inc.for developing a new"continuous process"for manufacturing KEYTRUDA®(pembrolizumab),an anti-cancer therapy drug.Design of Safer and Degradable Chemicals award is won by Pro Farm Group,Inc.by developing RinoTecTM,a an enhanced microbial pesticide for crops.Viridis Chemical Company won Small Business award for developing a process for making ethyl acetate from corn instead of chemicals derived from coal or methane.Professor Dionisios G.Vlachos from University of Delaware won Academic Category award for developing a process to generate three classes of lubricant base oils commonly used in vehicles and industrial machinery.Specific Environmental Benefit—Climate Change award is won by PhoSul® research team for making phosphate fertilizer that avoids hazardous chemicals and waste emissions associated with traditional phosphate fertilizer production.
