Objective To develop a self-management program for pre-frail elderly in the community and assess its effectiveness. Methods Based on the protection motivation theory,a self-management program was developed for community-dwelling pre-frail elderly individuals.Cluster sampling was used to select 68 pre-frail elderly residents from different communities in Xinxiang from January to June 2023.Participants were randomly assigned to a control group(n=34)and an intervention group(n=34)by drawing lots. The control group received standard community care, while the intervention group received the self-management program based on the protection motivation theory for three months.Frailty status,self-management ability, and psychological resilience were assessed at baseline and after 1,2,and 3 months of intervention. Results After 2 and 3 months, the Fried frailty phenotype scores in the intervention group were significantly lower than those in the control group(P<0.01);scores on the Adult Health Self-Management Ability Scale and the Brief Resilience Scale were significantly higher in the intervention group compared to the control group(P<0.05).Significant group effects, time effects, and interaction effects were observed for the Fried frailty phenotype scores and the Adult Health Self-Management Ability Scale scores(P<0.05),while time and interaction effects were significant for the Brief Resilience Scale scores(P<0.01).Conclusions The self-management program for community-dwelling pre-frail elderly individuals positively impacts frailty status and is worthy of promotion by healthcare providers.
