Comparative study on the quality of life of patients with schizophrenia between Uigur and Han nationality
BACKGROUND: Since schizophrenia is a chronic psychotic disorder and can severely influence the life of the patient and his family, the quality of life(QOL) of patients with schizophrenia and his relatives are now increasing paid great attention to. But what' s the difference between the schizophrenia patients of Uigur and Han nationality with different culture background still remained less acknowledged.OBJECTIVE: To investigate the difference of QOL in patients withschizophrenia between Uigur and Han nationality, as well as the correlative factors, and probe into the therapeutic method for improving QOL of patients of Uigur nationality.DESIGN: Cross-sectional investigation.SETTING: Rehabilitative Department of Buhu Hospital, Zhongshan City,and Psychotic Rehabilitation Department of Xinjiang Psychiatric Center.PARTICIPANTS: Totally 91 patients(36 of Uigur nationality and 55 of Han nationality) with schizophrenia were recruited from Xinjiang Psychiatric Center between January 2000 and January 2001, who were confirmed of schizophrenia according to the second revision of China Classification and Diagnostic Standard for Psychiatric Disorders and could complete the questionnaire in stable phase of the disorder.METHODS: The recruited schizophrenia patients of Uignr and Han nationality were asked to fill the General Questionnaire of Life Quality(GQOLI-74) with MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Scores for twenty factors in four dimensions of somatic, psychological, social function and state of material life.RESULTS: Somatic function(64.01 + 13.78) and social function (54.62 + 15.68) were found markedly better in schizophrenianic patients of Uigur nationality in contrast with the schizophrenianic patients of Han nationality, and the difference has statistical significance( t = 3.40, 2. 17; P < 0. 05 - 0.01 ); but there were no obvious difference in the state of material (59.03 + 16.91 ) and psychological function(60. 12 + 15.88) . Multiple regressive analysis was used with total scores as attributive variable and each dimension as automatic variable, which revealed that standard regressive coefficient of psychological function, material life state, somatic function and social function were r=0.392, r=0.253, r=0.216 and r=0. 157 respectively in Uigur nationality group.CONCLUSION: General QOL of schizophrenia patients of Uignr nationality was better than that of Han nationality, which was closely correlated with their better interpersonal relationship and social assistances, and consequently active psychological intervention and better material life should be provided for them.
