The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the severity of lower extremity peripheral artery disease (PAD) and serum biochemical indicators in the patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. A total of 102 diabetic patients were divided into non-lower extremity PAD (N-PAD), mild-lower extremity PAD (A-PAD), moderate-lower extremity PAD (B-PAD) and severe-lower extremity PAD (C-PAD) groups based on ankle-brachial index (ABI), and 30 healthy subjects were included as the control group. The relationship between the severity of PAD and serum biochemical indicators was analyzed, respectively. Compared with the control group, the serum levels of fasting plasma glucose (FPG), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), and low-density lipoprotein-C (LDL-C) increased, while the serum levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and 25 hydroxyvitamin D[25- (OH) D]decreased, in the N-PAD, A-PAD, B-PAD, and C-PAD groups (all P<0.05). The severity of PAD was positively correlated with the serum level of FPG, and negatively correlated with the serum level of 25- (OH) D (bothP<0.05). In conclusion, the serum levels of FPG and 25- (OH) D may be closely associated with the development of lower extremity PAD in diabetic patients.
