Investigating Postgraduate Students'Emotion Regulation Strategies in Writing and Publishing Academic Papers
Informed by the integrated model of emotion regulation in achievement situations, the study surveyed 363 Chinese postgraduate students'use of emotion regulation strategies in the process of writing and publishing English academic papers, and explored factors influencing the selection of emotion regulation strategies through 14 semi-structured interviews. The results indicate that:(1)postgraduate students used five families of emotion regulation strategies(i.e.situation selection, situation modification, attention deployment, cognitive change, and response modulation),albeit unevenly;(2)their selection of emotion regulation strategies was jointly determined by internal factors(e.g.,beliefs and emotion intensity)and external factors(e.g.,writing situations and interpersonal relationship);and(3)beliefs often play a key role in this process. These findings expand the scope of emotion regulation research in second language writing situations, enrich the integrated model of emotion regulation in achievement situations by finely graining emotion regulation strategy taxonomy and capturing the nuances of achievement contexts, and uncover the mechanism underlying the selection of emotion regulation strategies.
