Interactional Effects of Topic Familiarity and Learner Creativity in the Continuation Writing Tasks
The study examined the impact of topic familiarity on the complexity, accuracy and fluency of 80 middle school French learners'continuation writing, and the roles their divergent thinking, convergent thinking and creative personality played in moderating the relationships. Results showed that 1)familiarity with the topic led to greater syntactic complexity but lower accuracy and lexical complexity in the learners'writing;2)the negative effects of topic familiarity on the error-free clause measure of writing accuracy were observed only in those who scored low in creative personality, while learners with higher personality scores were less influenced;and 3)the facilitative effects of topic familiarity on the mean length of clause measure of syntactic complexity became more noticeable as learners'convergent thinking advanced, with higher-level thinking representing larger effects.
