Is the Comprehension of Sentences in Mandarin Affected by Temporal Order Relationships?
This study conducted a self-paced reading experiment to explore the effects of different chronological relationships(reverse chronological and chronological order)on the comprehension of Chinese sentences, based on the hypothesis of the Principle of Temporal Sequence. The temporal order of the sentences was manipulated using the terms qian(before)and hou(after). The qian sentences represented the reverse chronological order, while the hou sentences represented the chronological order. The results revealed no significant differences in comprehension among native Chinese speakers when reading sentences in chronological and reverse chronological order. These findings suggest that the temporal order does not significantly impact the understanding of such sentences for native Chinese speakers and that the reverse chronological sentences do not consume additional processing resources. Therefore, these results imply that the Principle of Temporal Sequence may not be universally applicable.
