Online Processing of Article Presuppositions by Chinese EFL Learners in Different Contexts
The[±Uniqueness]presupposition distinguishes definite and indefinite articles, thereby requiring integration of information at internal or external interfaces for its processing. This study investigates Chinese EFL learners'online processing of article presuppositions through sentence judgment and self-paced reading tasks under visual, linguistic, and world knowledge contexts. The results show that the processing difficulty of indefinite articles is greater than that of definite articles, indicating that the preset processing of indefinite articles is relatively indirect and the acquisition difficulty is higher;the processing difficulty in the world knowledge context is greater than in other contexts, indicating that the main difficulty in article processing lies in integrating external interface information. These findings help uncover the nature of article acquisition difficulties and provide insights for second language acquisition research based on the Interface Hypothesis.
