The Impact of L2 Morphological Awareness on Listening Comprehension by Chinese EFL Beginner Learners
This study examines the impact of L2 morphological awareness(MA)on listening comprehension by Chinese EFL beginner learners via dictation tasks and retrospective interviews, with a focus on the effects of MA level and type(inflectional, derivational and compound).A significant positive correlation is revealed between L2 MA and listening comprehension, with learners of a higher MA level demonstrating significantly better listening comprehension because they were more capable of inferring the meaning of unknown words and identifying the morphemes that do not match between pronunciation and spelling. In terms of MA type, inflectional awareness is found to contribute most to predicting subjects'listening comprehension, with derivational awareness and compound awareness ranking the second and third respectively. These results are discussed in terms of morphological knowledge accumulation, vocabulary memorization strategies and Ll transfer, with implications offered for morpheme and listening teaching at the basic stage of English education.
