Current Developments in the Study of Deliberate Metaphor Theory
Deliberate Metaphor Theory(DMT),an emergent theory in metaphor studies,has sparked a heated debate.By reviewing relevant literature,this paper reveals significant trends of development in existing DMT studies,namely,the upgrading of theoretical models and the expansion of the application scope.Several deficiencies are also identified in these studies,including ambiguous delineation of the relationship between model dimensions and cognitive levels,unclear connections with other metaphor theories,narrow range of data types and lack of empirical research.Consequently,suggestions for future research on DMT are provided from the aspects of optimizing theoretical models,expanding data types,explaining theoretical relationships,accelerating empirical research and refining deliberate metaphor identifying procedures.
