Will Foreign Language Education in the AI Era Undergo a Disruptive Revolution?
This paper argues that AI should promote the transformation of the educational system based on the inheritance of educational traditions, rather than causing a disruptive revolution. The characteristics of technological change are discussed first, revealing that each industrial revolution has had a profound impact on the economy and social structure. In the field of education, however, this impact has more often promoted human-centered development rather than revolutionary changes. As education is characterized by continuity, stability and inheritance,a hasty"educational revolution"could lead to disastrous consequences. The development of foreign language education should thus follow the principle of gradual reform and steady progress. The unique challenges that AI faces in foreign language education are then analyzed, including the alienation of the essential nature of language learning and the neglect of cultural diversity. Finally, this paper calls on foreign language educators to actively embrace AI technology, integrating it organically into the existing educational system to produce high-quality outcomes and elevate foreign language education to new heights of reform. It is crucial to avoid rashly following trends and shouting"revolution"slogans, which could lead the development of foreign language education in the wrong direction.
