Effects of Lexical Category Typicality on Processing"Disyllabic Verb+Disyllabic Noun"Structures in Modern Chinese
This study investigated the processing of Chinese"disyllabic verb+disyllabic noun"structures(functionally realized as either verb-object structures or modifier-head structures)based on the typicality of lexical categories. The investigation was conducted using a phrase acceptability judgement task administered to 120 junior high school students. Results showed that both verb typicality and noun typicality influenced the processing of these structures.Specifically, the difficulty hierarchy for processing these structures was:typical verb+typical noun(verb-object structure)≈ typical verb+atypical noun(verb-object structure)≈ atypical verb+typical noun(modifier-head structure)<typical verb+atypical noun(modifier-head structure)≈ atypical verb+atypical noun(modifier-head structure). These findings indicate that the lexical category typicality of the head influences the processing difficulty of phrasal typicality, supporting both prototype theory and endocentric construction theory.Furthermore,verb-object structures with a typical verb and modifier-head structures with a typical noun should be classified as a typical"disyllabic verb+disyllabic noun"construction.
