The Effectiveness of Attentional Manipulation on L2 Incidental Vocabulary Acquisition:A Meta-Analysis
Extensive research has been conducted to empirically investigate the effectiveness of attentional manipulation on L2 incidental vocabulary acquisition. However, these studies vary greatly in terms of the size and direction of the effect.Based on a meta-analysis of 46 experimental-control group studies, this study demonstrated that in comparison with no attentional manipulation condition, attentional manipulation exhibited an overall large effect on L2 incidental vocabulary acquisition. The moderating effects of potential moderator variables were also examined and discussed. While lending support to the effectiveness of attentional manipulation in pedagogical interventions of vocabulary knowledge, this meta-analysis testifies and enriches the newly proposed"Involvement Load Hypothesis Plus"model under instructional settings.
