Effects of Task Planning on L2 Writing Performance:A Meta-Analysis
The present study adopted the meta-analysis method to explore the effects of task planning on L2 writing performance, and analyzed the moderating factors influencing the effects of task planning. The meta-analysis included 33 empirical studies, yielding 175 independent samples. The results of the meta-analysis indicate that strategic planning significantly affected syntactic complexity, accuracy and fluency, while online planning only had a significant influence on accuracy.Institution type moderated the influence of strategic planning on accuracy, and task genre moderated the effects of strategic planning on lexical complexity and fluency, while length of planning was a moderating factor of the impact of strategic planning on syntactic complexity and fluency.Institution type, task genre and online planning condition did not moderate the effect of online planning on L2 writing performance. This study provides empirical evidence for the theoretical debate on the effects of task planning on L2 writing performance.
