Frontiers and Trends in International Research on Systemic Functional Linguistics
Theoretical studies from the perspective of systemic functional linguistics(SFL)continue to grow strong, particularly with developments in visual grammar, legitimation code theory, interpersonal grammar,eco-linguistics,grammatical metaphor, and translation theory.Comparatively, few studies are on the theoretical issues in phonology and vocabulary, system, context,or the Cardiff Grammar.Among the applied studies,discourse-related research, education and teaching, multimodality, translation and typology are developing rapidly, whereas studies related to health and technology, cognition and language policy, body language and sign(gesture)language are on the rise.New technologies in the new era today call for the deepening of meaning-based linguistic theories, and SFL can play an important role for this purpose in the future human-machine interaction and increasingly networked language activities.SFL is supposed to not only continue to deepen the research on discourse, but also to strengthen the research on phonology, vocabulary, and system description. The research on children's language, computational and quantitative research, and language description needs to be strengthened as well.More importantly, the focus should be on theoretical issues of language at the levels of human-machine interaction and networked meaning choices.
