New Trends in the Study of Engagement Resources in Academic Articles
The Engagement system focuses on the positioning of authorial voice and its negotiation with various voices in discourse.The strategic configuration of engagement resources contributes substantially to the shaping of interpersonal meaning in academic articles.This article reviews the new trends in the study of engagement resources in academic articles which include verbal and non-verbal engagement realizations,the comparison of engagement resources as well as the co-selection of engagement resources.Although research articles tend to be dominated by verbal engagement,the examination of non-verbal engagements and multimodal interaction needs to be extended in the dimensions of discipline and language.Comparative studies of engagement targeting different author groups,different languages and/or different disciplines call for more stringent criteria for the identification of engagement resources and a finer-grained descriptive system.More research attention should also be given to the co-selection of monogloss and heterogloss.The article concludes with a suggestion for future research to focus more on engagement resources in Chinese academic discourse and diachronic analysis of engagement resources in academic articles.
