Language Assessment in the Era of Artificial Intelligence:Opportunities and Challenges
This paper discusses the application of artificial intelligence(AI)in the field of language assessment and the opportunities and challenges it brings.Language assessment has evolved from being purely human-driven to being machine-assisted and now involving AI,reflecting increasing societal demands and technological advancements.By leveraging AI,language assessment has demonstrated advantages such as higher efficiency,scalability,objectivity,and consistency,as well as personalization and adaptability.It also provides opportunities for continuous assessment and immediate feedback.These advantages create possibilities for improving summative assessment,strengthening formative assessment,advancing authentic assessment,implementing dynamic assessment,and enhancing the fairness of assessment.However,language assessment that relies on AI also faces challenges,including limitations in language understanding and processing capabilities,inaccuracies in generated text,inconsistencies in assessment results,data biases,increased professional development needs,and concerns over privacy and security.Going forward,researchers need to further explore the application of AI in language assessment to ensure the accuracy and fairness of assessment.This will involve addressing the identified challenges and leveraging the opportunities presented by AI to enhance the overall quality and effectiveness of language assessment.
