Advances in surface modification of biomedical nitinol
Biomedical nitinol is widely used as a surgical implant material due to its unique shape memory effect,superelasticity,and excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility.However,the excessive precipitation of nickel ions may cause adverse reactions such as allergies and inflammation.Meanwhile,nitinol belongs to bioinert materials and lacks responsiveness to the tissue environment.Surface modification is the most commonly used strategy to improve the corrosion resistance and specific biological functions of nitinol.In this review,we summarized three kinds of surface modification methods including physical,chemical,and compound modification technologies;the characteristics,advantages,and limitations of each method were analyzed.The relevant research progresses of surface modification on biomedical nitinol were introduced and the existing problems were pointed out.Besides,the future development direction of surface modification of biomedical nitinol was prospected.
