Status of the European eel industry's development after joining the CITES appendix Ⅱ and its enlightenment to China's eel industry
European eel(Anguilla anguilla)is one of the most commercially valuable eel species in the world.Since the European eel was included in appendix Ⅱ of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora(CITES),European countries have strengthened protection and management of European eel resources,and the European eel industry has undergone major changes.This paper reviewed the protection and management measures taken by European Union and countries for European eels,summarized the current status of the European eel industry with respective to resource,fishing,aquaculture and recreational fishery,analyzed the impact on the European eel industry imposed by joining the Convention and addressed the faced challenges.Inspiration and suggestions of Chinese eel industry were also provided to respond to the possibility of the Japanese eel(A.japonica)listed in appendix Ⅱ of CITES.It is proposed that China should strengthen the long-term and basic survey and assessment of Japanese eel resources;strengthen the protection and proliferation of eel resources;go all out to break through the fully artificial breeding technology of Japanese eels;strengthen fishery cooperation with related countries;and develop alternative eel resources,continuously improve and enhance eel aquaculture technology.
