Examination and Interpretation of the Tombstone of Pei Zheng of Sui
Pei Zheng was born in one of the side branches of the Pei clan in the Hedong area,named Xijuan Pei Fang.His ancestors traveled south in the Jin Dynasty and served as officials in the Liu Song Dynasty.Since most of his family were military attachés,its reputation was not as great as other famous families.Pei Zheng was active in the later years of Emperor Wu and the period of Emper-or Yuan of Xiao Liang Dynasty,and worked in the Western Wei Dynasty,the Northern Zhou Dynasty,and the Sui Dynasty.In his personal life,he experienced many important moments of the country's transition from division to reunification during the Northern and Southern Dynasties.His later life re-flected the struggle and integration of the northern and southern political groups in this particular peri-od.Although it's difficult to avoid mistakes in historical records,according to the text of Pei Zheng's epitaph,we can also see many ambiguities due to Pei Zheng and the writer's personal experience and the limitations of the time.Only by examining two kinds of materials and based on strict deduction and demonstration can the true history be restored.
