In the study of early Chinese film history,Zheng Zhegu has long been a neglected figure.He is known not only for playing the role of Carpenter Zheng in China's earliest surviving film Labourer's Love,but also for being recognized as a benchmark in acting by both movie professionals and audiences of his time.He serves as an exemplary model of a successful transition from stage performance in the new drama acting to screen acting.By examining the relationship between Zheng Zhegu and early Chinese film performances,this study will not only enhance our understanding of the intricate connections between early Chinese films and the new drama,but also offer a new perspective on the evolution of Chinese cinema from"cinema of attractions"to narrative films.
