Zhang Liaozi was a famous Xiqu critic during the Republic of China period,active in the realms of news and theatre criticism.He is most well-known for his debates with Hu Shi,Qian Xuantong,and Liu Bannong,in which he defended Xiqu and sparked a far-reaching debate on whether to favor Xiqu or modern dramas.As a major member of the"Mei Party",Zhang Liaozi paid early attention to Mei Lanfang and his performing arts,writing articles to praise him and playing an important role in Mei Lanfang's artistic innovation and image shaping.Zhang Liaozi and Mei Lanfang had a close relationship,constantly exchanging poetry and prose.They often wrote and recited works for each other,leaving behind precious literary stories.This paper restores the true nature of Zhang Liaozi,providing an example for further research on the interaction between modem intellectuals and Xiqu artists.
