Objective To investigate the effects of massage therapy on inflammation on model of knee joint fibrosisin rabbits. Methods 30 SPF-grade male new zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into blank control group, model group, massage group, topical paste group and herbal paste massage group,6 from each group. The blank control group was conventionally fed, while the other 4 groups underwent joint injury fixation to create the model.1 week after modeling, the massage group received manual thera-py;the topical paste group received external application of knee and arthralgia herbal paste, and the herbal paste massage group received herbal paste massage therapy. The intervention frequency for the massage group, topical paste group and herbal paste massage group was once daily for 4 consecutive weeks. The levels of interleukin-1β(IL-1β),interleukin-6(IL-6)and tumor necrosis factor alpha(TNF-α)in the pe-ripheral blood, and the score of inflammation in scar tissue were observed after 4 weeks of intervention;scar tissues were collected from each group after the intervention for HE staining pathological observation. Results Compared with blank control group, the levels of IL-6,IL-1β and TNF-α in were significantly higher than those of model group(P<0.05),the levels of IL-6,IL-1β and TNF-α in the group of plaster-massage were significantly lower than those in the group of massage(P<0.05),and the levels of IL-6,IL-1β in the group of plaster-massage were significantly lower than those in the group of massage(P<0.05).However,there was no significant change in TNF-α content. After 4 weeks of intervention, the in-flammation scores of blank control group, model group, plaster group, massage group and plaster group were 0,3,1,2,1 respectively.Caesalpinia sappan jing-eosin(HE)staining showed,Compared with the model group, the proliferation degree of fibrous tissue and fibrous granulation tissue, the number of inter-stitial acute and chronic inflammatory cells and fibroblasts were decreased in plaster group, massage group and plaster-massage group, the proliferative lesions in the plaster group and the plaster group were lower than those in the plaster group. Conclusion Herbal paste massage therapy can effectively reduce postoper-ative inflammatory reactions and inhibit excessive fibrosis of scar tissue.
