Effect of PDLLA on bone healing properties of ultrasonic bone welding technology evaluated based on Micro-CT
Objective To evaluate the influence of ultrasonic vibration heating produced by ultrasonic bone welding technology on the bone healing performance of PDLLA material during the application process u-sing micro-computed tomography(Micro-CT).Methods 36 male New Zealand white rabbits were select-ed and randomly divided into 4 groups:ultrasonic bone welding technique assisted PDLLA material group(A group),Screw-in technical auxiliary PDLLA material group(B group),sham group(C group),and blank control group(D group),with 9 rabbits in each group. After 4,8 and 12 weeks of the surgery, the mandibular bone specimens were removed, and the surrounding bone tissue was stained with hematoxylin and eosin(HE)to observe the surrounding conditions of the implanted pins in each group.Micro-CT ima-ges of the mandibular bone specimens were taken at 4,8 and 12 weeks postoperatively, and the data were reconstructed in 3 dimensions using VG Studio MAX software. The data samples were aligned, with the buccal side of the mandible as the axial direction, and the dynamic analysis of the number of volume of the implanted material, the relative bone volume(BV/TV),trabecular thickness(Tb.Th),trabecular num-ber(Tb.N)and trabecular spacing(Tb.Sp)and other bone healing-related indicators was conducted.Re-sults The results of HE staining showed that according to 3 times, bone callus can be observed in groups A,B and C to form bone. The process of woven bone was in line with the process of normal bone injury healing. The micro-CT results showed that there was no significant comparison of material volume differ-ence between the 3 postoperative time points in groups A and B(P>0.05);At the 3 time points,No sig-nificant comparison of BV/TV,Tb.Th,Tb.N and Tb.Sp results in the 200 µm ring area around the 4 groups(P>0.05);In the bone defect area, there was no significant difference between BV/TV,Tb.Th,Tb.N and Tb.Sp in groups A,B and C(P>0.05).There were significant differences in BV/TV,Tb.Th,Tb.N and Tb.Sp in groups A,B and C(P<0.05).Compared with group C,the difference of Tb.N in groups A and B was statistically significant(P<0.01).At 8 weeks after the surgery, there were significant differences in BV/TV,Tb.Th,Tb.N and Tb.Sp between groups A,B and C(P<0.05).At 12 weeks after the surgery,BV/TV,Tb.Th,Tb.Sp was significantly in groups A,B and C compared with group D(P<0.05).Conclusion The PDLLA material's bone healing performance is not adversely affected by the ultrasonic welding technology's ultrasonic vibration heating effect.
