Effect of breastfeeding on endometriosis related pain
Objective To evaluate the effects of breastfeeding on dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, and chronic pelvic pain(CPP)in patients with endometriosis. Methods Forty-eight pregnant women with endometriosis were divided into three subgroups based on du-ration of breastfeeding after delivery:1-2 months(group A)(n = 14),3-5 months(group B)(n = 15),and 6-8 months(group C)(n = 19).Dysmenorrhea,dyspareunia,and CPP pain intensity were assessed by 10-point visual analog scale(VAS)before pregnancy(T0),3(T3),6(T6),12(T12),and 24(T24)months after delivery, respectively. Results Compared with before pregnancy,VAS dysmenorrhea scores of group A,group B and group C decreased after delivery, and the improvement of dysmenorrhea scores of group A and GROUP B was statistically significant only at 3 and 6 months after delivery(all P<0.05).The score improvement of group C was statistically significant during the follow-up period(all P<0.05).The improvement of dysmenorrhea was positively correlated with the duration of breastfeeding(r = 0.628;P = 0.017).CPP scores improved in groups A,B and C,but decreased only in group C at 3,6 and 12 months after delivery(all P<0.05).CPP improvement was positively correlated with duration of breastfeeding(r = 0.714;P = 0.021).Conclusion Breastfeeding improves dysmenorrhea and CPP in endometriosis patients in proportion to the duration of breast-feeding.
