The Variation in National Suicide Rates:An Explanation Based on Culture-gene Coevolution of Collectivism and the 5-HTTLPR S Allele
To explain the global distribution of suicide rates, this study is based on publicly available data from authoritative sources such as the World Health Organization. It proposes and tests a conceptual model that incorporates the co-evolution of collectivist culture and the 5-HTTLPR S allele as explanatory factors. The analysis reveals that collectivist culture and the prevalence of depressive disorders serve as sequential mediators between the population proportion of individuals carrying the 5-HTTLPR S allele and suicide rates. The hypothesis of co-evolution between collectivist culture and 5-HTTLPR S allele has gained preliminary support, that is,collectivist culture may buffer the negative impact of carrying 5-HTTLPR S allele on individuals and groups, reducing regional prevalence of depressive disorders and suicide rates.
