Cognitive map can not only map physical space, but also support cognitive spatial mapping, result in map-like representation across different information domains, including perception space, episodic memory space, conceptual space, and social space. The neural mechanisms underlying cognitive space mapping include hippocampal abstraction and generalization of hidden structures, support for the generation of distributed location maps, bundling stimuli with contextual structures, and synergy between the hippocampus formation and other brain regions.Future research should focus on issues such as predictive cognitive spatial maps, hippocampal representations of cognitive information at different precision and hierarchy, the research vacancies at the micro and mesoscopic levels of cognitive space mapping, and the commonality and specific mechanism of physical space and cognitive space mapping.
