Adulteration of natural essential oils not only reduces their quality,but also may pose safety risks.With the increasing understanding of the chemical composition of natural essential oils,more and more analytical methods have been developed and applied to the authentication of natural essential oils.These methods include chiral analyses,isotope ratio mass spectrometry,chemometrics coupled with chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques,and so on.In this article,the applications of the latest authentication techniques for natural essential oils in the past 5 years were reviewed with specific examples,aiming to provide insights for the authentication of natural essential oils.
