The Interspecific Competiton Between Woloszynskia sp. and Alexandrium tamarense: Influence of Phosphate Concentration and Initial Cell Density
The effects of both phosphate concentration and initial cell density on population growth and interspecific competition between an invasive species Woloszynskia sp.MMDL3013 isolated from the ballast sediment of ships at Xiamen Port and one of the known harmful alga Alexandrium tamarense MMDL3041 were investigated in the present paper by semi-continuous culture method. The results showed that the interspecific competition between the two algal species under low phosphate conditions was resource-exploiting competition, and Woloszynskia sp.was the dominant species. However, the interspecific competition depended on the initial cell density when they were in high phosphate concentration.
