Objective To explore the influence of Lopinavir and Ritonavir Tablets on immune function and liver and kidney function of AIDS patients with poor immune reconstitution after the treatment with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART).Methods Retrospective analysis was made on the clinical data on 40 AIDS patients who had received the treatment with HAART but showed poor immune reconstitution and then received the treatment of Lopinavir and Ritonavir Tablets ("the research group") and that on 28 AIDS patients who had also received the treatment with HAART and showed poor immune reconstitution but continuously received the treatment with HAART("the control group"). The changes in immune function, liver function and kidney function, as well as the clearance of viral load of HIV RNA were observed and compared before the treatment and after 12 months' treatment in and between the two groups. Results Before the treatment, the immune function (CD4 +T lymphocyte count), liver function [alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), kidney function [serum creatinine (Scr), creatinine clearance rate (Ccr)] and HIV-RNA load levels were not significantly different between the two groups (P > 0.05), but after 12 months' treatment, the CD4+T lymphocyte count in the research group was higher than that before the treatment and that in the control group (P < 0.05) while the HIV-RNA load levels was lower than that before the treatment and that in the control group (P < 0.05); after 12 months' treatment, the liver function (ALT and AST) in the control group increased significantly in comparison with that before the treatment(P < 0.05), while there was no significant change in the research group(P > 0.05); there was not significant change in kidney function in the two groups before and after the treatment (P > 0.05).Conclusion Lopinavir and Ritonavir Tablets are favorable for regulating the immune function of AIDS patients with poor immune reconstitution after the treatment with HAART.
