Since 1990s, under the support of the central and provincial governments, the upland sugarcane growing areas represented by Guangxi have greatly improved the productivity and sucrose content in sugarcane depending on breeding and popularization of new elite sugarcane varieties, development and extension of advanced and adopted new sugarcane cultivation technologies such as deep plough and soil ripping by machines, water-saving irrigation including sprinkle and drip irrigations, rational application of vinasse as liquid fertilizer, intellectual fertilization, plastic film mulching, application of virus free seedcanes, integrated controls of diseases, pests and weeds, trash incorporation into fields, chemical regulation of crop growth etc. Information technologies have being applied in management of sugarcane production, harvest, transportation and processing. These have played significant roles in realizing the leap over development of Chinese sugar industry. The basic researches for sugarcane have been emphasized and significant progresses have made. Active international exchanges have benefited the industry and promoted the sugarcane research levels in China. Several important international conferences on sugarcane technologies have been held and the International Association of Professionals in Sugar and Integrated Technologies (IAPSIT) have been established and run well with its permanent Secretariat in China, making China an international academic exchange center for sugarcane.
