Research on CHEN Fangke from the Perspective of Newspapers and Periodicals of the Republic of China
CHEN Fangke was often evaluated by academics as both a "gifted scholar" and a "libertine". The former refers to his talent in composing classical poetry and his knowledge in literature compilation and identifica-tion,while the latter pertains to his indulgent lifestyle in his youth and his experience of holding a position in the puppet government. Some journal columns from Newspapers and Periodicals of the Republic of China collected pic-tures,poems,prefaces,and other materials related to CHEN Fangke. These historical materials help to break the "stereotyped" evaluations of CHEN Fangke in academic circles. CHEN Fangke not only pursued an elegant de-meanor but also possessed a sense of responsibility to save the country and its people, which he incorporated into his literary creations. The preface to the "Shi Ju Ji" (a collection of his works) and his creative pursuits in response to Wang Guowei's works, found in newspaper literature, demonstrate CHEN Fangke's literary creation philosophy of reflecting his true self and pursuing innovation.
