The Status Quo and Characteristics of Occidental Research on Chinese Martial Arts:with reference to the dissertations in PQDD
In order to survey the academic influence of Chinese martial arts in European and American univer-sities,and to aid Chinese scholars to discover the status quo and the characteristics of occidental research on Chi-nese martial arts, this paper drew upon mathematical analysis and text analysis to sort out and scrutinize the 76 mas-ter and doctoral dissertations on Chinese martial arts collected in the world famous dissertation database (ProQuest) from 2000 to 2023. The study found that:1) In terms of the annual volume of dissertations, owing to the aging of the population and the prevalence of chronic diseases, the efficacy of Chinese martial arts represented by Taijiquan in the treatment of unsick and chronic diseases has been gradually paid more attention. 2) From the perspective of the graduate training units, the master and doctoral dissertations on Chinese Wushu are mainly concentrated in the United States. There is no research team of this field in other foreign countries,or even if there is any,the research direction is not stable. 3) From the lineup of supervisors,non-Chinese are the majority. 4) From the research con-tents,the humanities and social sciences mainly focus on martial arts literature, martial arts films, martial arts teaching, martial arts philosophy and other aspects, while the natural sciences focus on the effect of Taijiquan on mental illness, balance ability, obesity, memory and other aspects. It is concluded that the Characteristics of occi-dental research on Chinese Martial Arts include:1) pursuing specificity in research concepts;2) pluralism in re-search contents;3) advocating cross-boundary in research methods;4) discreteness in research trends. This study is of great significance for the implementation of the globalization development strategy of Chinese martial arts and the improvement of the postgraduate training system of traditional Chinese national sports science.
