Effects of perilla seed extract on growth performance of Simmental weaned calves
This experiment was conducted to study the effects of perilla seed extract(PSE)on growth performance of weaned Simmental calves.A total of 60 healthy Simmental female calves of about 90 days of age were randomly divided into four groups, with 15 calves in each group, which were divided into a control group(fed a basic diet without PSE,PSE0),a PSE low-dose group(fed a basic diet supplemented with 0.5‰PSE,PSE1),a PSE medium dose group(1‰PSE,PSE2 added to the basic di-et),and a PSE high dose group(2‰PSE,PSE3 added to the basic diet),respectively. The experimental period lasted 90 days, the pre-test period ten days, and the formal test period 80 days. The results showed as follows:1)The average daily gain of Sim-mental female calves in PSE2 and PSE3 groups supplemented with perilla seed extract was significantly higher than that in PSE0 control group(p<0.01),but there was no significant difference between PSE2 and PSE3 groups(p>0.05);2)The cross height and body diagonal length of PSE2 and PSE3 groups were significantly higher than those of PSE0 control group(p<0.05),but the differences were not significant with PSE1 group, and the differences in body height, chest girth and tube girth of each group were not significant(p>0.05).In summary, perilla seed extract can significantly increase daily gain and positively affect the body size index of Simmental calves, and the optimal supplemental level is 1‰.
