Analysis of Volatile Components in Snorting Energy Sticks with GC-MS
The growing trend of snorting energy sticks among young students has captured the attention and concern of various societal sectors. To elucidate the physiological risks associated with the ingredients,a solid phase microextraction coupled with GC-MS technique was employed to analyze 30 samples from 15 brands, featuring 21 distinct scents. The analysis revealed the presence of 69 distinct compounds.Among the identified constituents,L-camphor and D-camphor are the principal elements of camphor, while borneol and isobornol are the predominant components of borneol.Menthol is primarily composed of menthol, and 1,4-cineole and eucalyptol are the key elements of eucalyptus oil.Additionally,α-pinene,camphene,sabinene,β-pinene,myrcene,α-phellandrene,3-carene,4-carene,D-limonene,linalyl acetate,trans-cinnamaldehyde,and linalool are recognized as volatile compounds found in essential plant oils.Butyl acetate, ethyl butyrate, isoamyl acetate, hexyl acetate, allyl caproate, propylene glycol, and iso-alkanes ranging from C11 to C16 are largely solvents and flavoring agents, valued for their aromatic properties and solubility.A comprehensive examination and comparison of the categorized ingredients and their quantities across different brands of energy sticks indicate a complex composition.Notably, even within the same brand, the ingredients detected in energy sticks of the same scent varied, and the same was true for products with identical listed ingredients on their packaging.Furthermore, while camphor, borneol, menthol, and eucalyptus oil are explicitly mentioned on the packaging, numerous other substances are not clearly disclosed. This underscores the fact that energy sticks contain a multitude of potentially harmful substances, the long-term misuse of which could detrimentally impact health. The inhalation method not only poses a risk to the nasal mucosa but may also inadvertently promote a negative model of substance abuse. It is imperative, therefore,to enhance the regulation and oversight of these products to safeguard public health.
