Zhang Taiyan,Shanghai National University and Ningbo Municipal Library:an Account of the Professionalism of NML's First Director Ms Zhang Ruzhao
In the summer of 1925,Zhang Taiyan,together with other scholars opposing the"restoration"of the president of the Southern University of Shanghai,Jiang Kanghu,founded the private Shanghai National University.SNU's Department of Librarianship(with DingU Doo as its dean)was the first librarianship department in modern China.By combing through historical materials,this article attempts to sort out the history of SNU as well as Zhang Taiyan's Precidency,and to reconstruct the development of SNU's Department of Librarianship under Doo's direction.On this basis,this paper examines the relationship between Zhang Taiyan and Zhang Ruzhao,the first director of the Ningbo Municipal Library,while illustrating the latter's professional contribution during service.Therefore,this article highlights Zhang Taiyan's work in aiding junior scholars,pointing out his indirect role in boosting China's early library career.Meanwhile,with provision of a glimpse into the cultural and educational landscape of China in the 1920s,it manifests the humanistic sentiments and aspirations of modern scholars then.
