The Orientation and Academic Evaluation of Talent Cultivation in Hu-manities in the Perspective of New Liberal Arts
The topic concerning new liberal arts has become one of the most talked about issues among current university teachers, especially those from Chinese universities included in the Double First-Class Initiative. However, there are still significant differences in understanding the meaning of new liberal arts among different people. This article is based on the author's previous research and provides further elaboration on the four characteristics of new liberal arts in Chinese universities. The differences between new liberal arts and traditional liberal arts in Chinese universities lie in that the former is interna-tional,interdisciplinary,cutting-edge,and theoretical. The development of new liberal arts should be led by top-notch domestic and international talents. In addition,high-quality development of new liberal arts and their multi-dimensional academic achievements surely will promote the reform of the academic evaluation system, including the evaluation of talents.Whether a discipline can be considered first-class depends first on whether there are first-class talents to lead the discipline and serve as important academic backbones.A strong academic team composed of top-notch talents is the guarantee to make first-rate achievements in scientific research.Top-notch talents play vitally important roles in humanities.Without doubt, the evaluation of humanities and that of science and engineering should be different, and it should not be one-sided pursuit of quantification.Instead,it should be subject to qualitative evaluation from the peers in the discipline based on quantification. In short, cultural development is crucial in pursuing the Chinese path to modernization. In this regard, the international talents in humanities trained in the per-spective of new liberal arts will have a unique role to play.
