Factors influencing the membrane distillation of urine brine using on ionomer membranes
Water recovery from urine brine is vital to improving water closure in the environmental control and life support system of the space station.Considering the unique properties of high acidity, strong corro-sion and complex composition of urine brine,we have developed indirect heated sweeping gas membrane dis-tillation technology with a ionomer membrane as medium. In this study, distillation rates of seven proton membrane materials under two contact modes of gas phase and liquid phase were obtained to compare their capacity for active water adsorption, water transport and urine brine tolerance.A theoretical model of mass and heat transfer was established under the mode of liquid phase contact of urine brine to investigate the in-fluence of five main factors on the distillation rate, including membrane thickness, urine brine concentra-tion,inlet air flow, inlet air humidity and inlet air temperature.Consequently, the inlet air humidity posed a stronger impact on the distillation rate. The relative standard deviation between the calculated distillation rate and the measured value was 5.8%,which verified the validity of the theoretical model. These results will provide a theoretical and experimental guidance for the development and application of water recovery technology for urine brine.
