Liu Xiang's Political Ethics Thoughts and Its Contemporary Value:Focusing on Returning to Essence of Garden of Anecdotes
Liu Xiang of the Han Dynasty(77BC-6BC)discusses the relationship between ethical essence and literary grace in Garden of Anecdotes(novels collection,17 BC).Ethical essence is the cornerstone, and the literary grace of novels is only an adjustment. It is necessary to prioritize ethical essence before narrative style, resist excessive literary embellishments, and strengthen the expression of ethical essence. At the same time, the essence and grace should complement each other and none of them should be neglected.Returning to essence means being simple, frugal and not extravagant.Returning to essence is an expression of Chinese political and ethical thought, which is closely related to the Confucian concept of Gentle and Elegant.Returning to essence contains rich connotations, which includes taking people as the first thought, abstinence from luxury, leading by example, daring to advise, respecting the wise, honor the scholars and emphasizing practice. This paper suggests that the above ethical thoughts are part of excellent traditional Chinese culture, and have referential significance for promoting the modernization of social governance system and capacity.
